Does your dog suffer from lung or general respiratory congestion? Conventional medications may include antibiotics, steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs to help reduce overall mucous and congestion. But what are the alternatives? Did you know that there are some wonderful herbs that can really help improve your dogs breathing and overall lung health. Today let’s look at my top 5 herbs to help do just that.
While there is certainly a place for medications, I find that when it comes to lung and upper respiratory congestion you can’t beat the power of herbs. There are a number of fantastic herbs for improving lung health and clearing out mucous and congestion, making it easier for your dog to breathe whether that’s due to infection, allergies etc. So let’s jump into our first herb Mullein(Verbascum thapsus) is a flowering plant that is a member of the snapdragon family (my grandmother used to grow these when I was a little girl) It has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for respiratory conditions. Mullein leaves and flowers contain various compounds that have benefits for lung health. Mullein is often used as an expectorant, which means it may help to loosen and expel mucus from the respiratory tract. This can be beneficial for conditions such as coughs, bronchitis, and congestion, as it makes it easier to clear the airways and promote easier breathing. Soothing respiratory irritation: Mullein is known for its soothing properties, due to its mucilage content. Mucilage is a gel like substance that coats all mucous membranes in the body and this helps alleviate respiratory discomfort and irritation. It is commonly used to calm coughs, sore throats, and respiratory inflammation. For myself I always reach for Mullein if I have a dry irritating cough and it works very quickly to ease the symptoms. Mullein also has great anti-inflammatory properties Inflammation in your dogs lungs can contribute to respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Mullein's anti-inflammatory properties may potentially help reduce inflammation in the respiratory system and provide relief for associated symptoms. And finally, Mullein has been found to have antimicrobial properties, which means it may be effective against certain pathogens. Mullein's antimicrobial activity can help target viral and bacterial lung infections to help support your dogs immune response. In terms of dosing, I would use 1 drops per kg bodyweight 2x daily although more can be used in very early acute stages of infections or inflammation.
