This mushroom looks a lot like the tail of a turkey. But unlike a turkeys real tail, this medicinal mushroom packs a punch when it comes to supporting your dogs immune system, especially when it comes to cancer.
Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor or Coriolus versicolor) is a mushroom that grows on dead logs all around the world. ItsIts name comes from the coloured rings on the mushroom which look a bit like the pattern of a turkey tail feathers. Like many of the medicinal mushrooms, we are now seeing a lot of interest in the health benefits of using mushrooms for both ourselves and our pets. And turkey tail is no exception. In fact, when it comes to treating cancer, this might be one of the most important mushrooms to consider. • So what makes turkey tail so amazing?? The main active ingredients in this mushroom are what are known as beta glucans- in this case, 2 specific ones known as Polysaccharide-K (PSK) • Polysaccharide-P (PSP). Think of these beta glucans as giving the cells of this fungus its strength and structure. And while beta glucans help support the mushroom itself, in terms of their impact on your dog’s immune health, they are definitely worth considering. Because of the way that these beta glucans can affect your dogs immune system they can help balance it whether it is over or underactive. And we call this an immune modulator. So say for example your pet has been suffering from come type of chronic infection or lowered immune state, then turkey tail can provide a much needed boost to the immune system. But on the other hand, if your dog is currently dealing with some type of autoimmune disease where the immune system is overactive and attacking the body, turkey tail can dampen down this response and help regulate it to bring about more balance.
